For the third time in Luxembourg’s history, one of its cities has been chosen as a European Capital of Culture.

This time the honour goes to Esch-sur-Alzette, located in the formerly industrial south of the country which attracted large immigrant populations, particularly from Portugal and Italy. The city will carry the title for all of 2020 during which a series of cultural events with a strong pan-European dimension will be held. The city’s theme during this time will be ‘remix culture’ to emphasise the future of Europe as peacefully multicultural and heterogeneous. Esch-sur-Alzette (or simply ‘Esch,’ as most locals call it) will host concerts, exhibitions, and theatrical performances.
